Distilling gin with the purest RO water in Western Lancashire, UK

SITUATED IN THE PICTURESQUE COUNTRYSIDE AND OVERLOOKING THE COASTAL PENINSULA OF WESTERN LANCASHIRE, BLACK POWDER GIN PRODUCES SOME OF THE FINEST GINS IN THE WORLD. At the heart of the distillery, a traditional copper still named Eliza-Grace which was manufactured in Serbia is capable of producing 350-400 bottles in a single run. It is filled with a so-called wash, a 50/50 mixture of neutral grain spirit and the purest water, to which botanicals are added.

WATER EDUCATION

For the purest water, Black Powder Gin opted for a G500 RO system, supplied by Global Water Solutions. The G500 is a 400GPD system capable of producing 400 gallons or 1500 liters of purified water per day. The G500 system is paired with two Challenger GCB-450LV tanks which are used for storing the produced RO water in the best conditions until it’s needed in production In addition to its use in the wash, the RO water is also used for cutting down the gin to bottling strength. Basically, the alcohol/gin that comes out of the still starts off around 88% ABV and will average out on completion of the run around 76% ABV. This is then cut down with pure RO water to create different strengths: 37.5%, 40% and 60% bottled spirits. For a 350 bottle production run, Black Powder Gin uses around 250 liters of RO water for the wash and a bit over 100 liters for cutting down.
